QS Fair Athens 28-2-2023

28 February  2023

On Tuesday 28 of February 2023 we participated in QS “Top Universities” Master’s Event, which took place in Royal Olympic Athens Hotel.
We are happy that the University of Strathclyde was included among several institutions.
QS Master’s event for future master’s degree students had two parts: a networking fair and pre-scheduled meetings through QS Connect.
Overall, the exhibition gave to upcoming students the perfect opportunity to meet with world-leading universities and find out more about master’s programmes, admissions processes and student visas. Students also had the chance to share their CV beforehand with the business schools and universities they were particularly interested in and discuss in a personal meeting on the day. In addition, they were able to ask university teams and alumni about life on campus, employment opportunities during and after their studies, funding options and how their chosen programme will suit their career goals.
We hope that similar events will follow in the future!

MS Weekend 11 & 12-2-2023

11 February  2023

The Intensive Seminar of Making Strategy (MS) took place during the weekend, Saturday 11th and Sunday 12th of February 2023, in Strathclyde’s Greek Centre, International Management Studies (IMS), which is located in Chalandri, Athens.
The lecture was presented by Professor David McKay and it was addressed to our students who study our Executive MBA and our Executive MBA with a specialism in Shipping.
It was a productive well-spent weekend with plenty of presences including students who flew from abroad to join those who live in Greece and the others who attended the class virtually.
Making Strategy class aims to develop students’ ability to make strategies for their own department, operating unit, Strategic Business Unit. It seeks to introduce in theory and practice the principles of negotiating strategy in a small management team.
The learning outcomes concern the ability to facilitate negotiation across competing views about the strategic future of the organization and in particular manage different perspectives and organization politics, to understand and develop action plans with respect to the systemic pattern of strategic issues facing the organization, to detect emergent strategizing goals, to proceed into an in-depth analysis of distinctiveness, to apply causal mapping and feedback loops to explain the basis of the business model and develop strategic priorities. Last but not least, through MS students can acquire cognitive abilities and skills. In detail, they can identify, understand and apply a wide range of management theories as conceptual handles to enhance practice. In addition, they will be able to understand the language of strategy and strategic management that is rooted in strategy making as a social process.

Roy Jenkins MBA Project Prize Award 2022

6 February  2023

We are extremely proud to announce that the University of Strathclyde awarded to Mauro Melas this year’s 2022 ROY JENKINS MBA Project Award for his outstanding project performance.

His thesis entitled “Servitization of power generation equipment in the nuclear power industry” was sufficient to bestow worthily upon him the specific highest award.

Our congratulations to him and his supervisor Dr. Harris Apostolopoulos, who contributed to this achievement!

According to Mr. Mauro Melas, Dr. Harris Apostolopoulos played an integrated role in the implementation of his MBA project. Having the guidance and support of Dr. Apostolopoulos along his journey, Mr. Melas, among various aspects, was able to focus and find a good flow for his report. The result revealed undoubtedly the quality of their collaboration.

Review of 2022 by David Hilier

20 January 2023

What was 2022 like for you? Executive Dean Professor David Hillier reviews the year and what’s been happening in Strathclyde Business School.

At this time of year, when we get the chance to reflect on the last 12 months, it’s gratifying to take some time out, look back and see how our students, staff and alumni continue to strive and succeed.

Our November graduations saw many celebrating their Strathclyde journey and, as well as students from our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, we also saw our Executive Education courses and three cohorts of Breaking Barriers graduate in person.

This year we continued to work with organisations across industry and the third sector to move forward with our socially progressive agenda. Like our Breaking Barriers programme, I was delighted to see another partnership flourish.

Strathclyde Business School continues to move forward with innovative education programmes.

Our MBA offering was fully reviewed and updated this year, focusing on responsible leadership and strategy in practice. The new MBA includes extensive business engagement opportunities, including a new MBA leadership series of workshops, a case competition and networking events. We were also delighted to introduce our Global Practitioners initiative – thirty professionals from across the business world bridge theory and practice and play a crucial role in stimulating and facilitating learning for our MBA, executive education and specialist Masters students.

One of the key events in the academic calendar took place this year. As some of you will know, years of work go into the UK government’s Research Excellence Framework exercise. The latest one recognised the University of Strathclyde for its research and impact on society and the economy, where almost 90% of the University’s research has been rated ‘world leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’. Reflecting Strathclyde’s motto as ‘the place of useful learning’, the University’s impact and research environment were recognised as particularly strong, with both quality profiles being above average for the sector.

Our MBA was ranked in the top 100 of the FTs Executive MBA and the top 95 of the FT’s European Business School rankings. Notably, we were one of just 17 UK business schools in the European ranking and one of only three in Scotland.

This year saw our MBA and Executive Education teams brought together under the same umbrella so that all our MBAs in Glasgow and overseas now sit in the same structure as our MBAs tailored to the specific needs of businesses such as Iberdrola and Babcock International. We have long-standing relationships with these companies, and it was fantastic to see them back on campus – some for the first time since starting their studies in 2021 due to Covid restrictions.

I am honoured and proud to lead SBS as we contribute to the University of Strathclyde’s role as a socially progressive leading international technological university. On all fronts, Strathclyde Business School aims to be a place of useful learning that makes a positive difference to the world. Despite the challenges the world has faced over the past twelve months, the Business School has continued to improve and impact the lives of our many students, staff and stakeholders.

The year ahead will no doubt bring its surprises, but with the quality of staff and students we have in the Business School and wider university, I have no doubt we’ll continue to be bold and ambitious, seek to innovate with our industry and societal partners and keep our people at the centre of all our operations.

SAE Weekend 3 & 4-12-2022

03 December  2022

The Intensive Seminar of Strategy Analysis and Evaluation (SAE) took place during the weekend, Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th of December 2022, in Strathclyde’s Greek Centre, International Management Studies (IMS), which is located in Chalandri, Athens.

The lecture was presented by Professor Harry Sminia and it was addressed to our students who study our Executive MBA and our Executive MBA with a specialism in Shipping.

It was a productive well-spent weekend with plenty of presences including our students who flew from Switzerland to join those who live in Greece and the others who attended the class virtually.

Strategy Analysis and Evaluation class aims to develop students’ ability to work as managers within complex, essentially dynamic and systematically interwoven organisational environments by providing them with the analytical skills to understand and use different strategy theories.

In general, SAE introduces students to different strategy theories that each can be used to critically analyse organisations and the issues that they are faced with. Additionally, the class provides to students with the means to develop and evaluate strategic options in terms of maintain and developing sustainable competitive advantage and legitimacy. It relies on experiential teaching methods and the goal of the class is for students to gain experience in undertaking rigorous in-depth analyses and formulating cogent, substantive and credible arguments defending a recommendation as it is being selected from a range of options for a particular strategic issue. At the end of the class students will have experienced working under conditions of incomplete information, ambiguity, uncertainty, and time constraints, common characteristics of strategic management and strategy development in fast-moving, competitive environments with conflicting interests.
