Queen Elizabeth’s Funeral 19-9-2022

19 September  2022

A kingdom united in grief mourned the loss of their revered Her Majesty the Queen marking the end of a reign that defined an era.

Today’s ceremonial events were the culmination of nearly two weeks of public arrangements, codenamed “Operation London Bridge,” honoring Elizabeth’s remarkable life — from a young princess who was not born to be Queen, to a sovereign who redefined the role and won almost universal admiration.

The state funeral for Queen Elizabeth II, Britain’s longest-reigning monarch, whose rule spanned seven decades, took place in London.

King Charles III, the late monarch’s son and heir, was joined by the rest of the royal family and leaders from across the world for the service.

The funeral service began at 11 a.m. (6 a.m. ET) and the Queen’s coffin arrived around 7:30p.m. in Windsor. Pomp and pageantry were on display as tens of thousands line the streets of the British capital and hundreds of millions tune in for the state funeral of Elizabeth II.

HM Queen Elizabeth II made her final journey to Windsor, where she was buried in a private memorial at St George’s Chapel alongside her late husband, Prince Philip, just over a year after his death.

In memory of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II

The University of Strathclyde as an educational institution was supported generously by Queen Elizabeth since she laid the foundations of the Technology & Innovation Center.

The University is a leader in research, constantly investing in human resources and infrastructure, with a huge budget, which was funded by the University with over 50% and was inaugurated in 2015 by Queen Elizabeth.

The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh formally opened our flagship Technology & Innovation Centre in July 2015.

They met a number of our researchers, engineers and project managers who work in the Technology & Innovation Centre. They’re working side-by-side on projects spanning future cities, manufacturing, health and energy.

The Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh visited a number of areas in our new centre:

Our landmark Centre is transforming the way academics collaborate with business, industry and the public sector.

We’re working together to improve Scotland and the UK’s standing in the global economy!

Queen Elizabeth & Scotland 12-9-2022

12 September  2022

Throughout her long life Queen Elizabeth was always keen to display her love and enthusiasm for Scotland.

Her mother, the youngest daughter of the 14th Earl of Strathmore, was from a Scottish family, who lived at Glamis Castle in Angus. Balmoral Castle on Royal Deeside was one of the few places she could relax and do the things she loved. Holidays at her mother’s family home were an early memory. The Queen looked forward to her annual family holiday at Balmoral. She always enjoyed walking and riding on the estate as well as spending time in the wider community, attending Crathie Kirk or visiting friends and relatives who live locally. The only formal occasion of the holiday was the annual Ghillies Ball, when estate workers danced with the Royal Family – who are all schooled in Scottish country dances. Local people, including members of the Scottish Womens’ Rural Institute (SWRI), were often invited to attend. Whenever she was in Scotland, the Queen also turned her attention to her day job – and a variety of routine and not-so-routine official duties.

In recent years she has named the Royal Navy’s largest warship, the aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth, and opened the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow. She also inaugurated the Borders Railway between Edinburgh and Tweedbank on the day in 2015 that she became the UK’s longest-reigning monarch, overtaking Queen Victoria’s record. One of the Queen’s most unusual visits was in 1958 to the newly-opened Rothes Colliery in Fife. In a white boiler suit, white headscarf and miner’s helmet, she descended 1,600ft (500m) in the cage to walk to the coal face. She was the first monarch since George V to go into a pit, and newsreel pictures at the end of the visit show the boiler suit was still pristine white.

Throughout her reign, the Queen has visited virtually every part of Scotland. She has opened the Scottish Parliament’s sessions, addressed the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, opened numerous bridges and launched many ships. She has made history on many occasions, including in 1960 when she became the first reigning monarch since the Viking King Haakon to visit Shetland. There was another first in 2022 when the appointment of Liz Truss as the new prime minister took place at Balmoral. The previous ceremonies had all taken place in London at Buckingham Palace.

Death of Queen Elizabeth 9-9-2022

09 September 2022

Her Majesty The Queen

Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Strathclyde, said:

“The leadership, Court, Chancellor, staff and students of the University of Strathclyde are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Her Majesty The Queen. During her long reign, Queen Elizabeth II ruled over a nation which has been transformed beyond recognition but she remained a constant, empathetic and reassuring presence – one whom her nation continually looked to and turned to in times of prosperity and hardship, in times of peace and strife.

“Like every part of the United Kingdom, the University of Strathclyde owes her a vast debt of gratitude. By signing our Royal Charter in 1964, she launched our institution into a new era and by opening our Technology and Innovation Centre in 2015, she gave the highest endorsement to our current and future strategy to have impacts of scale with socially progressive intent.

“She was known and respected throughout the world and has had an immeasurably positive effect on the United Kingdom’s global standing. The condolences and thoughts of the entire Strathclyde community are with the Royal Family at this time.”

Which MBA 2022 Economist Rankings Results 23-6-2022

23 June 2022

The results of The Economist’s 2022 ranking of full-time MBA programs were announced yesterday.

Τhe research was conducted through responses to quantitative and qualitative questions from thousands of current and former students in order to rank the top 100 full-time MBA programs this year.

University of Strathclyde and, more specifically, Strathclyde Business School, managed to climb at 95th place!

Interest in studying for an MBA remains high as MBA is one of the factors that drives applicants to rethink their careers and seek new opportunities. “An MBA equips them with the skills to make that jump.”

Furthermore, recent research from the Graduate Management Admissions Council confirms that the MBA remains a popular study option since MBAs are increasingly purpose-seekers.

MBA demands teaching that is highly topical and allows them to combine knowledge on the latest technologies with a deep understanding of global challenges that surround businesses.

There is no MBA program today that is not having to adapt and become more flexible!

Recent years have been characterized by the coronavirus pandemic, accelerating climate crisis and war in Ukraine and these have motivated students to want to learn how to navigate crisis situations and “build back better”.

It’s what tomorrow might bring that is capturing the attention of MBA programme directors, ready to pivot and adapt their teaching like never before.

YES Forum 10-6-2022

10 June 2022

The curtain of the most successful event of Posidonia fell in an atmosphere of emotion in the history of the exhibition, with the holding of YES to Shipping Forum 2022, on Friday 10 June 2022, which was honored by the presence of the President of the Hellenic Shipowners Association (EEE), Mrs. Melina Travlou, the former President of the EUE Mr. Theodoros Veniamis, the Founder and President of the Exhibition, Mr. Themis Vokos., the leader of the Coast Guard, Rear Admiral L.S. George Alexandrakis and Ioannis Lyras, member of the Board and former President of the EU.

The University of Strathclyde was there as a supporter of the YES FORUM represented by Dr. Iraklis Lazakis and Ms. Afroditi Feredinou.

Danae Bezandakou, Concept Founder of YES Forum, managed the event, which was successfully coordinated!

Greetings were also addressed by the Minister of Shipping and Island Policy, Mr. Yiannis Plakiotakis and the Minister of Education and Religious Affairs, Ms. Niki Kerameos.

Pupils, students and graduates from 14 to 29 years old once again attended the conference, which is now an institution, as it is being organized since 2016, in every exhibition of Posidonia to encourage dialogue between institutional bodies, academic institutions, executives and young people.

The program of the conference was designed to benefit young people to the fullest, bringing them in direct contact with companies and shipping professionals, bearing in mind that for many young people, it was their first Posidonia.

In the first part, the young people had the opportunity to visit more than 30 booths of the exhibition, under the guidance of one of the 50 volunteers of the YES (Young Shipping Executives) Forum who participated in the event. In this way, in addition to learning about the subject and the activity of the companies and the range of the shipping network, they also had the opportunity to give their CV directly to executives of these companies, greatly increasing their chances of being absorbed in the shipping market.

In the second part, all participants gathered in one room, having the honor to listen to the thoughts and advice from distinguished members of the industry.

In the third and final part, the young people were able to talk directly with 65 executives of shipping companies and academic institutions, posing questions and listening to what they had to share with them from their many years of experience.

May we all be healthy and meet once more at the next Posidonia exhibition!

Sea you soon, in 2024!

The Game Changer Elective 27 to 29-5-2022

29 May  2022

This year’s MBA elective class “The Game Changer” was a three day experience, from Friday 27th to Sunday 29th May 2022, which took place in Strathclyde’s Greek Centre, International Management Studies (IMS).

The class was presented by Mr. Alistair Gray and it was based on the homonymous title of his book that was published by Routledge in 2019.

During these three days, we were given the opportunity to meet again in person with the majority of our MBA students, where most of them came from abroad for this cause, along with Mr. Alistair Gray who also honored us with his presence. It was a remarkable moment for everyone who attended the class either face to face or online!

The aim of this class was to introduce the strategies, tools and techniques utilized by organisations in business and sport who not only improved performance over a sustained period of time – they changed the rules of the game in their industry or sector. It focused on considering the changes in strategic management theory and practice leading to the present day need for strategy, excellence and innovation, especially in a digital and analytics driven business environment.

Mr. Alistair Gray introduced the 5 Features of The Game Changer organisations so that our MBA students understand the difference between performance improvement and changing the game content. Furthermore, he explained the principles of Strategy Execution to secure real change or transformation in order to understand the key elements of a game changing Strategy and process for designing and executing it.

After the lecture and the discussion, our MBA students divided into groups and created a ‘Game Changing’ strategy for a business, sport or not-for-profit organization of their own choice. Their case studies were prepared in detail, demonstrating the required features that were shown in the final presentation.

The presentation with the most votes from all students was “HP’s 3D Printing”.
